Alignment & Sustainability: Why Your Daily #OneGreenThing Matters

Individual action - whether it be talking about the climate crisis, calling your members of Congress, or switching to more sustainable products, or simply spending time in nature- matters.

Your actions drive culture change. Yes, what you do, what you buy, what you talk about, what you wear makes a difference. You inspire others through your actions.

But making your daily choices a reflection of your deepest values isn't as easy as it sounds, right?

Let's face it - it can seem overwhelming to embark on your climate action journey. It's hard to know where to begin.

My #OneGreenThing today is starting here, moving forward one simple action at a time. It's not about perfection, it's about progress.

We didn't cause the climate crisis- the fossil fuel companies did - but we are all part of the solution - driving the necessary culture change to get big policy and market change to scale.

Climate anxiety - and the feelings of anger and worry that come along with the realization of what's ahead if we don't act fast -- are completely natural responses and even powerful catalysts for action.

Here are some #onegreenthings based on Service Superpower as we work to aligning our daily choices with our deepest values:

  • Adventurers: Take five minutes to think about your feelings about the future we're leaving the next generation. Check out this 2030 visualization exercise.

  • Beacons: Ask a young person you love about how they feel about the climate crisis. Let them know they are not alone and pledge to take action with them.

  • Influencers: Share your favorite sustainable brand with a friend and ask them about theirs.

  • Philanthropists: Make a plan to volunteer with a campaign for a candidate that shares your values or look up your federal officials on the LCV scorecard.

  • Sparks: Take a walk outside today and bring a friend.

  • Sages: Ask your congregation or community to consider reducing food waste and composting at events.

  • Wonks: Learn more about the clean energy tax incentives for consumers in the Inflation Reduction Act here.

Above all, we need to be patient with ourselves as we work hard to shift the culture, demand accountability, and push for systemic change. Striving for alignment is a noble goal, and working to become the awesome ancestors our future love ones deserve brings joy.
