The Texas Floods: OneGreenThing Resources for Climate Anxiety & Community Relief Efforts

At OneGreenThing, our mission is to tackle eco-anxiety and move toward action. Heartbreak, overwhelm, helplessness, and worry take hold as learn more about the devastation wrought by historic flooding in the Texas Hill Country. And just last night, Chapel Hill and Carrboro, North Carolina experienced extreme floods and dangerous conditions.
It could happen to any of us at any time, and climate-fueled natural disasters are coming at a rapid clip and are more extreme than ever.
We need to be prepared, lean into community, and fund emergency response at the federal, state, and local level. And, of course, work to address climate anxiety by being prepared, supporting our communities, and working toward climate solutions.
Many of us have family and friends impacted by the floods -- someone who has lost everything, lost a workplace, a school, a summer camp, or a person they love. You can support relief efforts by donating to the American Red Cross, World Central Kitchen, and the Kerr County Flood Relief Fund. Please give to flood relief efforts.

Young people in your life may know of campers who perished, or have seen the footage of the disaster. Here are some ideas on how to talk to young people about climate-fueled disasters.

Global warming is here, but it’s not too late. These tragedies also demonstrate that taking the word “climate” out of our governmental programs won’t erase its impacts or the need for federal science, support, or emergency aid and programs. Everything we do to limit warming now can make a difference. The climate crisis is the biggest challenge of our lifetimes and we all have a role to play.
